Tape condition: Every tape is visually inspected before processing begins. If a tape shows mould, sticky shed or physical damage, I'll let you know before going further — these sometimes need specialist attention first, and I can point you to the right people. When you get in touch, it helps to know:
The more you can tell me upfront, the better I can prepare.
Upscaling and stabilisation: VHS is 4:3 (PAL 576i). Stabilisation crops the frame, so AI upscaling is included in Premium to compensate. For Full Restoration, I'll agree on aspect ratio treatment with you — pillarboxing, cropping, or other — before starting. AI upscaling may introduce visual artefacts or a stylised feel depending on source quality — results vary and are discussed before proceeding.
Capture Workflow — The goal is always the same: extract the maximum quality the tape can still offer. No equipment can recover what time, dropout, decay or damage have already destroyed. Hardware and workflow are matched to each job and format — professional-grade options using Blackmagic hardware, DaVinci Resolve Studio, and custom Topaz or deep learning AI and ComfyUI workflows are available where the material warrants it.
Professional flatbed scanning — prints, negatives, slides, and glass plates. I've worked on originals by Frank Hurley, one of Australia's most celebrated documentary photographers. Results depend heavily on the source — a tiny, badly damaged original has limits no amount of skill can fully overcome. Tell me what you've got and I'll give you an honest assessment before any money changes hands.
| Standard — archival scan plus restoration of fading, minor damage, colour correction | From $150/photo |
| Complex — major damage, missing areas, reconstruction, large format, or exceptional complexity | From $250/photo |
Describe what you've got and I'll tell you honestly what's achievable and what it'll cost — before you commit to anything.
Pricing: if a job turns out to be more complex than expected, I'll stop and talk to you before going any further — we'll agree a fair price before I continue. Turnaround is worked out when we discuss your job.
I reserve the right to decline any job where I assess the risk to the material or my equipment as unacceptable.
Your tapes and photographs are irreplaceable to you. I handle every one respecting that. Old tapes with mould, sticky shed or physical damage carry a real risk during playback — this is inherent to the medium, regardless of operator or equipment. Original photographs, particularly damaged or fragile ones, are handled with respect and care. If something goes wrong with material that was already in trouble, my total liability is limited to the fee paid for that job. Your rights under the Australian Consumer Law are not affected.
